Here’s our look at the biggest tech deaths of the year, organized into company or theme. To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https://ift.tt/2u8QBPx

15 more of the best indie PC games you might have missed in 2019

We’ve been putting together these “Games You Might Have Missed” lists for a long time now, trying to surface deserving indies you might’ve overlooked. It gets harder every year though—to narrow it down, I mean. There are just so many games . We logged over 300 review codes in 2019, and that’s still a tiny fraction of what actually released. Even shouting out 30 indie games a year doesn’t feel like enough anymore. All we can do is try, though. Below, you’ll find 15 fantastic indie games from the second half of 2019. Rhythm games, visual novels, frogs and alligators, skateboarding—it’s a rich and varied cross-section of the industry, and I’m certain you’ll find something worth taking a chance on. Though if you don’t...well, there’s our list of great indie games from the first half of the year  as well, not to mention our Game of the Year list . That’s like, 45 great games from 2019. How to work with Microsoft Word's cursive, script or handwriting fonts

Microsoft Word offers a variety of cursive and handwriting fonts (or typefaces, which is the more accurate name for the different font styles), and they're actually provided by the operating system rather than the Office version. For this story, we'll discuss the cursive and handwriting fonts available in Windows 10. Windows 10 currently has twenty Cursive (or “Script” typefaces), two Handwriting typefaces, three Blackletter typefaces, one Greek-Roman, and once Curly or Fancy typeface. Typefaces often fall into multiple categories; for example, Script and Handwriting typefaces are also classified as Calligraphy, Fancy, and Decorative. The Blackletter typefaces are also called Old English and Medieval; and the Greek Roman typefaces crossover with the Roman, Serif, and Gothic typefaces. (Windows limits its categories to Text, Informal, Display, and Symbol). (Feeling creative? You can make your own fonts in Windows 10 , too!) To read this article in full, please click here ...

If you got a Pixel 4 for Christmas, you should probably return it

The post-Christmas return lines are usually reserved for ill-fitting sweaters, ugly ties, and maybe even a duplicate Xbox game. But this year you might want to consider returning something a little more valuable: that new Google Pixel 4 Santa brought you. Why? Because any other phone you exchange it for will be better. I don’t say this lightly. In my review of the Pixel 4 XL , I gave it 3.5 stars and wrote, “It falls well short of nailing a top-tier phone experience.” But after another month with it, I’m now thinking I was too generous. In no uncertain terms, the Pixel 4 is the worst Pixel phone I’ve used and one of the most frustrating and confounding Android phones ever at any price. It’s buggy as hell, its battery life sucks, its update schedule flouts expectations... and those are only some of my objections. WD SN550 NVMe SSD: Good performance, very good price

WD’s new Blue SN550 is a nice improvement on the older SN500 , though it still isn’t going to worry the competition with its performance. However, other vendors sure won’t be happy that it’s 10 cents per gigabyte at the 1TB capacity.  Design and features The WD Blue SN550 is a x4 PCIe 3.0, M.2 NVMe SSD in the 2280 form factor. That is, 22 millimeters wide, and 80 mm long. The NAND is 96-layer TLC (Triple Layer Cell/3-bit) with an unspecified percentage utilized as SLC (Single Level Cell/1-bit) cache. More on that later. The 1TB SN550 we tested is $100 on Amazon (10 cents a gigabyte), while the 500GB is $70 on Amazon Remove non-product link , and the 250GB flavor costs $50 on Amazon Remove non-product link . While I didn’t find any better deals on a 1TB drive, I did find several cheaper 250GB and 500GB drives, so it’s the highest capacity where you’ll get the best bang for the buck. This week in games: Warcraft III remaster gets a launch date, multiple D&D projects confirmed

Well, this is it. The end of 2019, at least so far as I’m concerned. The verdicts are in, our Games of the Year list is out, and I can retire to a quiet life of playing Destiny 2 ’s Dawning event. In two weeks when Brad Chacos arrives on my loot farm I’ll tell him “I’m too old for this” before quietly picking up my gun and heading back into the trenches. Or something. Metaphors. Anyway, there’s one last trickle of news this week. Not even a trickle, really. Droplets from a leaky faucet. The Warcraft III remaster got a release date though, Wizards of the Coast confirmed five or six more Dungeons & Dragons projects, Sony gave the DualShock 4 a third leg, and Stadia did more Stadia stuff. How to remove your login password from Windows 10

Eliminating your login password from your PC is a bad idea—unless you own a computer in your private home that no one but you will  ever touch. In that case, why not remove your password and eliminate that initial step? In the past, we’ve discussed getting rid of the Windows 10 password by tinkering with Windows’ power settings . There’s a better way to remove the password entirely, however, so that you’ll never need to enter it ever again. We’ve tested this with Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Home, and it’s worked using the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, the Windows 10 May 2019 Update, and now the Windows 10 November 2019 Update, as well. (There’s no reason to believe it won’t work on subsequent updates, either.) To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https://ift.tt/32AY325

The 10 best PC games of 2019

Narrowing these lists down to ten entries is always difficult, but I think 2019’s been one of the hardest. When I compiled our usual mid-year roundup of the best games in June, I wrote “This list of the best games of the year so far is already so strong, it feels like a proper end-of-2019 Game of the Year list.” Six months and dozens of releases later, the task of deciding what goes and what stays on the actual list is near impossible. Some of my favorite games this year? Didn’t make the final cut. Games like  Devil May Cry 5 , What the Golf? , and Total War: Three Kingdoms . I wanted them to make it. I still do! But I couldn’t figure out what to sacrifice to make it happen. Hell, I already had to cheat a bit with our “Honorable Mentions” to squeeze in a few extra games, filling that section with any game that came out on a different platform prior to this year. The Steam Winter Sale arrives with historically low prices on Devil May Cry 5, Planet Coaster, and more

Epic's trying to woo you with twelve days of free games , but there's another winter sale launching today as well. One you might be slightly better acquainted with. Yes, the Steam Winter Sale kicks off today and runs for the next two weeks, ending on January 2. And like last month's  Thanksgiving   Autumn Sale , Valve's stepped it up. That includes some of our favorite games of 2019, like  Control   for 33 percent off, What the Golf?   for $13,  Observation   for 50 percent off, and  Metro Exodus   for $20—though in the case of the latter, it’s set to hit Steam in February. ...

Ghostery breaks out of the browser with Midnight, a privacy suite for your entire system

Ghostery’s ad-blocking extension is one of the more popular ways to protect your browser from unwanted trackers, but your online life isn’t limited to the web. That’s why Ghostery has launched Midnight , a new desktop app that blocks ads and trackers from a variety of apps, not just browsers. But this time, it’s going to cost you. Ghostery is calling Midnight a privacy suite, and its mission is clear: to “intercept and block invisible third-party trackers that pervade your browsers and applications.” It consists of three components—ad blocking, tracker blocking, and a VPN—and since it’s a full app, the interface is far more robust than its other products, with app-by-app controls and statistics about how you’re being tracked. It works across a wide variety of apps, including Spotify, Dropbox, Photoshop, and of course, Safari and Chrome.  To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https://ift.tt/2Sfa3UR

Google Drive vs. Microsoft OneDrive

There are three cloud storage service that most people consider using: Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive. More often the choice is coming down to the latter two. The magic combination of price and the convenience of integration with other Google and Microsoft services make them top choices. While both services offer the same basic thing—a ton of online storage at a good price—there are some key differentiators that make each service the right choice depending on your needs. Pricing and value The first big difference is what you get for what you pay. Anyone looking for the lowest price for the most online storage should be looking at Google. The best PC hardware of 2019: The Full Nerd ep. 118

It’s that time yet again, friends. In this episode of the Full Nerd,  Gordon Mah Ung ,  Brad Chacos ,  Alaina Yee , Adam Patrick Murray , and you —the live Full Nerd audience—engage in fierce debate (and occasional unabashed swooning) to crown the best PC hardware of 2019.   The rules: Everybody brings a favorite pick or two for each category. Then the group argues until we reach an agreement on the best product. If we can’t determine a winner via majority vote, we ask the live viewing audience to help break the tie. It’s a ton of fun. Corsair adds Scuf's beloved enthusiast-grade gaming controllers to its growing empire

Corsair’s insatiable hunger for gaming growth continues. On Monday, it announced plans to purchase Scuf , a company that specializes in high-performance gaming controllers beloved by gamers. This latest deal follows Corsair’s acquisitions of Elgato and Origin PC, two other enthusiast PC companies with established fan bases and a reputation for impeccable hardware. Scuf’s no-compromises controllers existed long before Microsoft’s Xbox Elite series and Astro’s C40 , and like Origin’s computers, they focus on customization, drawing inspiration from sources as far-ranging as astroturf and Forza .  Here’s how the press release sums it up, and we’d agree: To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https://ift.tt/36H78Z0

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 benchmarked: Performance soars, but not much

We learned quite a bit about Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon 865 last week, except for one thing: how fast it is. Now we know—it’s potentially the fastest around. Well, around Android, anyway. While our CPU and PC coverage leans heavily on benchmarking, we tend to focus more on the holistic experience of using phones like the Samsung Galaxy S10+ , rather than just the performance. But benchmarks still matter, of course, so we jumped at the chance to test Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 865 last week, in a demonstration suite at the company’s Snapdragon Technology Summit in Maui, Hawaii. Windows 7 dies in a month's time: How to move from Windows 7 to Windows 10

If you’re a Windows 7 user, your deadline is nearing:  Windows 7 officially exits support on Jan. 14, 2020 , so it’s getting  very close to the time you need to upgrade to Windows 10. “End of support” means that your Windows 7 or Office 2010 software will no longer receive updates, including security updates, according to Microsoft.  If you’re a consumer, there’s really no option but to upgrade to Windows 10. If your PC is part of a Windows 10 Professional or Enterprise volume license, joined to a domain, your company may be willing to pay Microsoft a per-device fee to maintain support for 2020. But that’s an option only for business PCs, not everyday users. To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https://ift.tt/35pEtHr

The Game Awards 2019's biggest reveals: Hellblade II, a new PlayerUnknown game, and more

Last night was the sixth annual Game Awards, and per usual that means a raft of trailers. Microsoft dropped a bomb on proceedings, announcing the name for its next-gen console— the Xbox Series X —and showing off the new look. Spoiler: It’s basically a PC. But there were also over a dozen “World Premiers,” freshly announced games to look forward to in 2020. Hellblade II , a new PlayerUnknown project, a new Dark Alliance game from Wizards of the Coast, and more. You’ll find all the PC-relevant announcements below. Logitech G Pro X Keyboard review: Hot-swappable switches let you mix and match

Spend enough time with any niche hobby and you’ll start to intuit what’s likely to become mainstream in the future and what won’t. With mechanical gaming keyboards, there are a number of trends I expect to see popularized in the near future. The more resilient PBT plastic is an obvious one, and indeed we see Razer experimenting with that on its latest Huntsman Tournament Edition  keyboard. Optical switches are another feature that Razer has toyed with. Low-profile keyboards are also gaining in popularity. Custom keycap designs? Telephone cables? Hell, Topre switches? Maybe, maybe, and maybe. To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https://ift.tt/36xHOog

Microsoft announces the Xbox Series X at The Game Awards, along with a Hellblade sequel

This is certainly proving to be a weird lead-up to the next generation of consoles. Sony's been low-key dribbling information every few months through a series of Wired exclusives. Now Microsoft's gone ahead and blown the lid off Project Scarlett at The Game Awards, of all places. The Scarlett codename is no more. The official name is the Xbox Series X, which I assume refers to the fact there will be multiple hardware setups at launch next November, one low-powered (but cheap) and one high-powered (but expensive). Presumably they'll both use the same box regardless, the elongated black obelisk shown in the reveal trailer below—though there's also a chance the name indicates the Xbox One X will be the low-cost option for next-gen. Best antivirus: Keep your Windows PC safe from spyware, Trojans, malware, and more

Antivirus software is nearly as crucial as a PC’s operating system. Even if you’re well aware of potential threats and practice extreme caution, some threats just can’t be prevented without the extra help of an AV program—or a full antivirus suite.  You could, for example, visit a website that unintentionally displays malicious ads. Or accidentally click on a phishing email (it happens!). Or get stung by a zero-day threat, where an undisclosed bug in Windows, your browser, or an installed program gives hackers entry to your system. We’re not suggesting that PC security software is fool-proof. Antivirus software often can’t do much to stop zero-day exploits, for example. But it can detect when the undisclosed vulnerability is used to install other nasty bits, like ransomware, on your machine. Anyone who actively uses email, clicks on links, and downloads programs will benefit from an antivirus suite. To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https:/...

Google makes it safer to text on Android phones, but end-to-end encryption is still MIA

As part of its year-end push to bring Android Messages up to speed, Google is rolling out two new features today: Verified SMS and spam protection . Together, they will help make sure your conversations aren’t taken over by people you don’t want to talk to. Like the phone app, Google won’t automatically filter out suspected spam messages, but it will warn you when it suspects one has arrived. You’ll be able to let Google know whether it got it right and also report spam texts, all of which will be used to improve the detection engine. In addition to flagging spam, Google will also verify whether you’re indeed chatting with the brand you think you’re chatting with. If so, Google will add a verification badge alongside the business name and logo in the conversation. Google says 1-800-Flowers ,  Banco Bradesco ,  Kayak ,  Payback , and  SoFi  are among the first brands to send messages with Verified SMS, with more being added daily. AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT review: Bleeding-edge, underpowered, and overpriced

When it comes to graphics cards, AMD’s owned the sub-$200 price point for years . Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1060 and 1660 series graphics cards couldn’t hold a candle to the value proposition of the Radeon RX 570 and 580, nor its predecessors, especially once AMD started bundling them with games galore. Those Polaris-powered GPUs are downright ancient, however, and suck down obscene amounts of power compared to modern graphics cards. Enter the new $169 Radeon RX 5500 XT, launching today after being teased in October . The Radeon RX 5500 XT brings AMD’s “Navi” GPU, built using the company’s next-gen RDNA graphics architecture, to the masses. Navi debuted in the Radeon RX 5700 and 5700 XT , which immediately became our go-to recommendations for 1440p gaming. Navi’s loaded with cutting-edge tech: The Radeon RX 5500 XT is one of the first consumer GPUs built using 7nm process technology, and to support the bleeding-edge PCIe 4.0 interface. It’s upgraded to ultra-fast GDDR6 memory. The card ...

Windows Security review: There are better options, but not for the 'price'

Image
For years, the attitude towards Windows 10’s built-in security was that it’s a nice idea, but you really shouldn’t rely on it. That stared changing in 2019, with the major testing houses giving Windows Security top marks. Could it be true? Can you really ditch your $100 annual antivirus subscription and rely on Microsoft’s native solution instead? Here’s our opinion. Windows Security is a very basic utility. In a way, it doesn’t need to be fancy, since it’s part of Windows itself. If you need extras like backups or hard drive cleaning, you can find that in other parts of the OS. Note: This review is part of our  best antivirus roundup . Go there for details about competing products and how we tested them. IDG The Windows Security dashboard.
