Leaks reveal Surface Pro 7, Surface Laptop 3, and Surface on ARM images before Microsoft event

More details about Microsoft’s upcoming Surface announcements have leaked out, revealing images of what apparently are the Surface Pro 7, Surface Laptop 3, and an ARM-based Surface, with perhaps more to come. Evan Blass, whose Twitter handle is @evleaks, published what appear to be marketing materials for the upcoming Surface devices, scheduled to be unveiled at a Microsoft event on Wednesday. The published photos generally line up with what was expected, including two different sizes of the Surface Laptop 3. A Microsoft representative did not immediately respond when asked for comment. There could be a surprise, too: a dual-screen Surface, Blass tweeted. (Though I follow Blass on Twitter and can see the images he posted, his tweets are protected—meaning that they can’t be linked to directly.)  To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https://ift.tt/2mphpY6

Microsoft adds OneDrive Personal Vault to secure your critical files and increases storage options

Note: This story was originally published on June 25, 2019. Microsoft said today that OneDrive Personal Vault is open to everyone.  Microsoft said Tuesday that OneDrive subscribers will receive a new OneDrive Personal Vault option that adds increased security to their online files, as well as additional storage tiers for existing subscribers. Personal Vault is designed for files you really  hold dear: tax information, scanned passports, that sort of thing. OneDrive Personal Vault will debut overseas, specifically Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, and will be available worldwide by the end of the year. OneDrive Personal Vault will offer the same features for free-tier and Office 365 subscribers, save one: O365 users can allocate as much space as they want to the Personal Vault, while those who use the free or the 100GB paid tier of OneDrive will be able to add a “limited number of files” to the Personal Vault. AMD adds Radeon Image Sharpening to Vega GPUs and Radeon VII after backlash

AMD released a driver update on Monday that added Radeon Image Sharpening support to its Radeon Vega-based graphics cards, including the Radeon VII . Doing so effectively ended a minor kerfuffle surrounding the new and awesome technology. Radeon Image Sharpening debuted in AMD’s excellent Radeon RX 5700 series graphics cards in July. Here’s how we described it then: “Radeon Image Sharpening uses algorithms to intelligently sharpen only the areas that need it, reducing the blurriness that can pop up when you activate various anti-aliasing methods or run games at a lower resolution than your display’s maximum. Better yet, it does so with next to no performance impact.”   To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https://ift.tt/2nVUT9M

AMD bundles Ryzen, Radeon with Borderlands 3, The Outer Worlds, and Ghost Recon Breakpoint

AMD is offering free games to sweeten its already-kick-ass GPU and CPU offerings. Called the “Radeon Raise the Game” and “Ryzen Equipped to Win” bundles, they offer a mixture of Borderlands 3, The Outer Worlds , and Ghost Recon Breakpoint . If you were already a fan of the new Ryzen 3000-series processors , the new Radeon RX 5700 series  (especially for 1440p gaming ), or the older Radeon RX 500-series graphics cards that remain top picks for 1080p gaming for under $200 , this is a great day. And this is on top of AMD's existing offer of three free months of Microsoft’s killer Xbox Game Pass for PC . To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https://ift.tt/2nTeJTc

AMD drops a 12-core Ryzen 9 Pro 3900 chip among other business-focused CPUs

Did AMD just drop a 12-core Ryzen CPU? It did, announcing on Monday morning its new line of 7nm Ryzen 3000 CPUs using Zen 2 cores. The highlight is the Ryzen 9 Pro 3900, which packs 12 of the company's Zen 2 cores and features a boost clock of 4.1GHz and a base clock of 3.1GHz. That's about 500MHz lower than the boost clock of the company's Ryzen 9 3900X, as well as 700MHz lower on the base clock. The difference is understandable, however, given the CPU's much lower 65-watt TDP rating. The Ryzen 7 Pro 3700 is in the middle with 8 cores, 16 threads, and a boost clock of 4.4GHz and base clock of 3.6GHz. The last Zen 2-based CPU is the Ryzen 5 3600, with 6 cores, 12 threads, a 4.2GHz boost clock, and a 3.6GHz base clock. Both are also 65-watt TDP CPUs. BitLocker, Windows' built-in encryption tool, no longer trusts your SSD's hardware protection

To paraphrase Fox Mulder, trust no self-encrypting SSD. As of the latest Windows 10 update, Microsoft’s BitLocker encryption tool that’s built into Pro and Enterprise versions will no longer assume that self-encrypting SSDs are, you know, actually securing their data. After researchers demonstrated last year that flaws in many self-encrypting SSDs could let baddies bypass that encryption thanks to a mixture of poor security implementations and secret Master Passwords set by the SSD manufacturers, Microsoft has closed that potential loophole by having BitLocker not trust hardware-based encryption by default.  To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https://ift.tt/2mZkLBE

Hands-on with HP’s new Spectre x360 13: Shrunk down and supercharged with Ice Lake

More of a refinement than last year’s full-on revamp, the latest HP Spectre x360 shaves off nearly an inch of depth, crams a tiny IR camera into its super-slim display bezel, and boasts crazy battery life. Oh, and Ice Lake! Set for release in October, the new HP Spectre x360 13 features the same classy gem-cut design as its predecessor , although a ruler will tell you that it’s nearly an inch (or 23mm, to be precise) less deep. That’s a neat trick given what’s inside: Intel’s 10th-generation Ice Lake CPU , including your choice of either quad-core i5 ($1,100) and i7 ($1,300 and up) configurations, complete with Iris Plus integrated graphics on the Core i7 models. Sweetening the deal is up to 22 hours of battery life, depending on the panel you pick. To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https://ift.tt/2nUWmNK

Ask a PC expert: Should you buy a used graphics card?

PCWorld CPU whisperer Gordon Mah Ung says it’s (mostly) safe to buy a used CPU . But is it safe to buy a used graphics card? Lots of people swear by it, but GPU expert Brad Chacos isn’t so bullish. Graphics cards have a lot more moving parts than static CPUs, and it’s easy to overclock the snot out of them. It all boils down to the risk-to-reward ratio. Brad explains why he typically isn’t interested in used graphics cards, what to look out for if you are shopping for a used graphics card, warranty concerns, and the price-to-performance differences between used and new GPUs. The Planet Zoo beta is fantastically enthralling despite some rough edges

“In loving memory of Jose. Galapagos Giant Tortoise. Adult. 34.9 years old. Died of starvation.” That last part’s a kick in the teeth. Here I am trying to run a respectable zoo. I’ve poured thousands of dollars into this money pit. I’ve scoured the globe for unique animals so the masses can mash their faces against the glass and yell “Do a trick!” blind to the minor miracle that is getting a grizzly bear to survive in 100-degree heat. And then one of my keepers simply forgot to feed one of the Galapagos Giant Tortoises until it starved to death . Planet Zoo is one of the most frustrating betas I’ve ever played, and yet I’ve already poured entirely too many hours into it this week, and probably many more to come. I can’t stop playing, even when it’s half-busted. To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https://ift.tt/2mztgmz

Intel maps out Optane's future and says Penta Level Cell NAND is in the works

In a massive storage data dump, Intel laid out its Optane roadmap and claimed an edge in Penta Level Cell NAND technology. That's not even mentioning the company's plans for fatter SSDs, and how long it'll take to get persistent memory to consumer PCs. The announcements were made Thursday morning at a storage event in Seoul, South Korea, where Intel showed off some new technology coming down the pike. Intel also announced that, after the very public and amicable divorce from Micron, it's moving its Optane development to Rancho Rio, New Mexico. Optane Roadmap: Barlow Pass If you've had a hint that Intel's been closely aligning its storage efforts with its CPU efforts, that hint turned into a nudge on Thursday: Intel confirmed that its upcoming Cooper Lake and Ice Lake CPUs will have support for its 2nd-generation Optane DC Persistent Memory modules. Codenamed Barlow Pass, the Optane modules will be closely tied with the upcoming Xeon CPUs. And yup, a yet unn...

Oculus Connect 6: Significant Oculus Quest upgrades could render the Rift obsolete

It’s been a big year for Oculus. Both its Quest and Rift S headsets released in April, effectively kicking off the second generation of consumer-grade virtual reality. The portable, wire-free Oculus Quest in particular felt revelatory, an almost desktop-caliber experience without the need for a desktop, playable at a moment’s notice. It’s arguably the biggest leap since Valve introduced position-tracked controllers and room-scale experiences with the HTC Vive. A big year for Oculus means a challenging Oculus Connect 6 though. Review: The All-new Kindle Oasis upgrades to warmer light and lighter weight

The very name of Amazon's “All-new Kindle Oasis” would seem to herald a radical overhaul. Thankfully, the changes to Amazon’s top-shelf e-reader are far less dramatic. Beyond the introduction of a new color-adjustable front light that can warm or cool the screen’s illumination, the All-new Kindle Oasis remains strikingly similar to its predecessor. And that’s good news. It's still the best e-reading experience you can buy.  The all-new Kindle Oasis no impulse purchase, though. The base level device, which includes 8GB of storage and Wi-Fi connectivity, starts at $250 if you’re willing to tolerate “special offers”—i.e. advertisements—displayed on your lock screen. Prices rise steadily from there. That same unit is available without ads for $270. A 32GB model with Wi-Fi runs $280 with special offers and $300 without. Finally, a 32GB model that adds free cellular connectivity and includes special offers costs $350. Three months of Kindle Unlimited are included for free with al...

Acer Aspire 5 (A515-43-R19L) review: A budget AMD Ryzen 3 workhorse with middling battery life

If this particular model of the Acer Aspire 5 looks familiar, it's probably because it's been sitting atop Amazon’s laptop bestseller list for months. It’s easy to understand why. With a list price of $350 but usually selling for closer to $310, this AMD Ryzen 3-powered Aspire 5 packs some enticing features for the price, including a Full-HD 15.6-inch display, a slim-and-trim chassis, and solid performance when it comes to day-to-day computing tasks. That said, a Windows 10 laptop this inexpensive has its compromises. In this case, we're talking a scant 4GB of RAM and a cramped 128GB solid-state drive, while battery life falls significantly short compared to similar Aspire 5 models that don’t cost much more. Indeed, if you stretch your budget just a tad, you can get an Aspire 5 (such as the Core i3-powered Aspire 5 ) that'll last considerably longer without a power adapter.  To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https://ift.tt/2lCM9Vg

Your smart device could have Alexa and Cortana and Spotify—and a whole lot more

A cluster of digital assistants you’ve probably never heard of—plus Spotify, Amazon’s Alexa, and Microsoft’s Cortana—are part of a new initiative enabling multiple wake words on a single device, including those running Windows 10. Essentially, you’ll be able to ask a generic device for a particular service directly, such as telling Spotify to play a particular song. Today, assistants like Alexa serve as a concierge of sorts, requiring you to tell them to play a particular song using Spotify, as opposed to YouTube or some other service. In fact, the new Voice Interoperability Initiative (VII) seems tailor-made for Windows 10 19H2 , which includes the capability for multiple digital assistants to live on the lock screen. Originally, the target candidates were Microsoft’s own Cortana, of course, and Amazon Alexa, which went through a prolonged courtship before Alexa became integrated inside Windows 10 . (You should be able to type or tell Cortana to launch Alexa inside the search bar ...

Windows 10's 19H2 Fall 2019 Update takes possibly its last step before a formal release

Windows 10’s Fall 2019 feature update, known colloquially as “19H2,” is moving from uncertainty to near-reality. On Tuesday Microsoft started pushing it out to the entire Release Preview ring of its Windows 10 Insider program. Microsoft first began deploying Windows 10 build 18363.385 (19H2) at the end of August  to the first, Slow ring of its Insider program , one of its three Insider rings. The company left the second Fast ring for the more substantive Spring 2020 feature update, also known as 20H1.  Microsoft traditionally prepares to release a feature update by sending it to the Release Preview ring, the third and most conservative testing ring of its Windows 10 insider program. In early September, Microsoft said that it was sending build 18363.385 to 10 percent of its Release Preview ring. Now everyone on the Insider Preview ring is getting it, leaving a general release as the next major step. To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorl...

Windows 10: What to expect in the next two releases

The next two Windows 10 updates, code-named “19H2” and “20H1,” reflect Microsoft’s recent decision to split the major Windows 10 feature releases into two: a full-fledged update, with new features, and a secondary patch update. We’ve already had the major “19H1” update, known officially as the May 2019 Update, so we’re now looking forward to the minor 19H2 patch and then the major 20H1 feature release. Here’s what we know so far about both of them. As of July 2019, the upcoming 19H2 feature will focus on “quality enhancements,” while the “20H1” feature will return to more substantive improvements. If the latter hews to Microsoft’s usual schedule, it’ll drop in March or April of 2020. Interim beta builds will provide further hints about what’s coming, and we’ll continue to cover them. Meanwhile, here’s where we stand on each release as of early August: To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https://ift.tt/2MhQJnE

Why you can stop paying for antivirus software

You don't need to pay for antivirus software anymore. Microsoft’s Windows Defender, a free service that’s built right into Windows 10, is now as good as the paid antivirus/antimalware solutions that have been collecting your money for years. There, we said it.  Many PC users became accustomed to paying for antivirus software for two reasons: Good, free alternatives were scarce, and Microsoft offered minimal protection via Windows, ceding the category to Norton, Kaspersky and a host of other third-party vendors. Windows’ first antimalware efforts were so abysmal that testing agencies like AV-comparatives.org and AV-test.org used Defender as the baseline (i.e., junk) level of performance. In December, 2013, for example, AV-test.org tested how well 23 antivirus vendors blocked real-world malware samples using Windows 8.1. Microsoft finished dead last .  To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https://ift.tt/2li2Xkc

The best 1080p graphics card for PC gaming

Sure, 4K and ultrawide-resolution monitors may dominate headlines, but most PC gamers play at 1080p resolution or below, according to the Steam Hardware Survey . And what a time it is to be gaming at HD! You used to have to spend around $250 to $300 to pick up a decent 1080p graphics card. These days, you only need to spend that much if you have a monitor with an ultra-fast 120Hz, 144Hz, or 240Hz refresh rate and want to squeeze as much out of it as possible. Most people play on 60Hz monitors and want games to hit a smooth 60 frames per second. Good news! The best 1080p graphics cards hit those targets without breaking the bank. You can even find some solid 1080p GPU options for under $150 if you don’t mind tinkering with in-game visual settings. A new Internet Explorer bug can take over your entire PC, so stop using it

If you haven’t moved beyond Internet Explorer, here’s another reason to do so: Google and Microsoft have discovered a new IE vulnerability that can take over your entire PC. (Discovery of the bug was credited to Clément Lecigne of Google’s Threat Analysis Group, and reported earlier by The Register .) The vulnerability “corrupt[s] memory in such a way that an attacker could execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user,” according to Microsoft. This week in games: Epic gives away six games at once, Rockstar tosses another launcher onto the fire

I hate publisher-specific game launchers. I want to play Red Dead Redemption 2 . These two truths are definitely at war this week. That news, plus Epic goes big on Batman, John Wick Hex and Disco Elysium nail down release dates, Anthem calls it (at least temporarily) quits, Total War goes to Ancient Troy, and more. This is gaming news for September 16 to 20. Batman begins First Epic gave away one game per week. Then, two. Now? Six . Okay, it’s still “two” technically, but Epic’s giving away two collections this week: Rocksteady’s Arkham Collection trilogy and the three Lego Batman games . There’s at least one stinker in the collection, and it’s Arkham Knight —but still, that’s a hell of a lot of video game for free. Maybe you’ll even be tempted to try out that new “ List Mode ,” eh? Microsoft streamlines 19H2 builds as Windows 10's fall update nears

With a month or so to go before Microsoft drops the scheduled Windows 10 “19H2” update, the company may be signaling that work is winding down. Recall that Microsoft began setting the stage for 19H2 in July, positioning the fall update not as a “feature release” of major changes, but instead a group of “select performance improvements, enterprise features and quality enhancements.” It might not be entirely fair to call 19H2 a “service pack,” but that’s probably a close analogy. Microsoft has been testing 19H2 in what’s known as the conservative “Slow Ring” of the Windows 10 Insider program. Meanwhile, the more adventurous “Fast Ring” has been reserved for the feature-rich update coming next year, known as “20H1.” To read this article in full, please click here from PCWorld https://ift.tt/2ZBPZ3F
